A suburban train operator had a long-standing problem. Their trains were too long for their platforms. This meant that the train doors may be inadvertently opened onto non-existent platforms, and that passengers may be stepping out onto the railway tracks. They needed a solution that didn’t leave passenger safety at risk. They needed to be able to accurately detect which train cars were adjacent to the platform, which doors should open and which needed to stay shut.
OEM was brought in, to turn this client’s twenty-year vision into a reality. Built-in GPS accurately tracks each car in a set and compares this information with pre-established geo-fences,
automatically detecting which doors are safe to exit at any given platform. Those cars which fall outside the geo-fence have their door-open command blocked, ensuring that only cars with an adjacent platform will open their doors.
A secure WiFi ‘backbone’ runs the length of the train, providing information to the crew. This backbone is cable free, which enables the train set to be altered and extended without the need for complex system adjustments.
